Is it your lunch or your sleep?

Both, usually.

Your body has a natural dip in alertness in the early afternoon. It happens even if you skip lunch. So some of the 3 pm feeling is just biology.

What you can change is how big the dip feels. That is where lunch comes in.

What makes the crash worse

  • A huge lunch. A very large meal sends your body into digestion mode and you feel heavy.
  • Mostly sugar or refined carbs. Sweet drinks, a pastry or a pile of fries digest fast and leave you hungry again.
  • Skipping breakfast and lunch, then crashing. Long gaps can leave you foggy and snappy.
  • Not enough water. Mild dehydration feels like tiredness.
  • Late caffeine. Coffee at 2:30 pm can wreck your sleep, which feeds the next day's crash.

A lunch that holds up

Think of the plate in three parts.

  1. Protein. A solid portion of chicken, beef or tofu.
  2. A measured carb. Rice or potatoes, not an unlimited pile.
  3. Vegetables. Fibre and volume, for fullness.

That is the exact setup in a Health On Top meal: 150g of protein, 200g of carbs and a 50g or 75g vegetable portion.

The caffeine trap

Coffee is not the enemy. Using it to cover for a bad lunch or poor sleep is. If you need three cups to survive the afternoon, look at sleep, food and water before the next cup.

If your tiredness is constant, severe or comes with other symptoms, speak to your doctor. This article is general information, not medical advice.

The short version

  • A small afternoon dip is normal.
  • Avoid a heavy, sugary lunch and long gaps without food.
  • Build lunch from protein, a measured carb and vegetables.
  • Drink water, walk a little and keep caffeine to the morning.

Quick answers

Why do I get tired after lunch?

Part of it is your body clock, which dips in the early afternoon whether you eat or not. A big, sugary or very heavy lunch, poor sleep, low water intake and late caffeine can make it worse.

What should I eat for lunch to avoid an energy crash?

Build the plate with a solid portion of protein, a measured carb and vegetables. Avoid very large meals and sugary drinks. Have water with it.

Does protein help with afternoon energy?

A protein-rich lunch tends to keep you fuller for longer, which helps you avoid snacking and grazing. It is one piece of the puzzle along with sleep and hydration.
