A bathroom scale on a dark floor

The scale is not lying. It is just noisy.

You ate well all week. You step on the scale. Two pounds up.

Take a breath. A body that weighs 170 pounds does not gain two pounds of fat overnight. It takes a huge calorie surplus to gain even one pound of fat.

What you are seeing is mostly water, and the weight of the food you ate.

What moves the number

  • Water. It is the biggest swing factor. Drinking more, or less, shows up at once.
  • Salt. A salty dinner can make your body hold water for a day or two.
  • Carbs. Your muscles store carbs with water. After a higher-carb day your weight can rise.
  • Food still in your gut. A big meal weighs something until it passes through.
  • Hard training. Muscle inflammation holds fluid.
  • Sleep, stress and hormones. All of them can shift water balance.

A swing of a pound or two in a day is common.

How to track progress without the stress

  • Weigh at the same time, ideally in the morning.
  • Look at the seven-day average, not one reading.
  • Add other signs: how clothes fit, how training feels, photos every few weeks.
  • Skip weighing for a while if it affects your mood.

Mistakes to skip

  • Cutting food hard after one high reading. You will rebound.
  • Weighing several times a day. It only amplifies noise.
  • Judging a day on the scale. A day is not a trend.

If you have concerns about your weight or your relationship with food, speak to a doctor or a registered dietitian. This article is general information, not medical advice.

The short version

  • Daily swings are mostly water and food weight.
  • Judge the weekly average, not one morning.
  • Keep your meals steady and let the trend do its work.

Quick answers

Why did I gain 2 pounds overnight?

Almost always water, salt and the weight of food still in your system, not body fat. Fat gain takes a large calorie surplus over many days.

How often should I weigh myself?

If you weigh yourself, do it at the same time under the same conditions and look at the weekly average. If weighing makes you anxious, skip it and use how clothes fit and how you feel.

Why does my weight go up after a salty meal?

Salt makes your body hold on to more water. It usually settles in a day or two once your intake goes back to normal.
